All Sunscreen is NOT Created Equal – What You Need to Know

5 Apr

It’s finally spring…which means flowers, walks outside, beach days and lots of sun. And, as you know if you’ve read my blog before, i’m religious about sunscreen. But, what most people don’t know is that all sunscreen is not created equal and the sunscreen in your makeup alone is not enough to protect you. It is critical that you not just wear sunscreen every day, but that you wear the RIGHT sunscreen.  Here’s what you need to know:

How to Get Rid of Under Eye Bags and Dark Circles

22 Sep

When people talk to you, they look at your face (hence the importance of good skin!). But more often than not, they are looking at your eyes – which makes dark circles and under eye bags a very visible and frustrating problem. Today’s post is a list of the most effective solutions to undereye bags and dark circles.

First, lets look at the causes:

Dark circles and bags generally come from a combination of the following factors: genetics, sun damage, allergies, aging, diet, and of course – a lack of sleep!

Undereye problems develop when the layer of fat underneath your eyes actually thickens over time, giving the illusion of dark circles. In addition, years of sun damage cause microscopic blood vessels to loose their stability below your eyes, creating undereye bags and loose skin. Other factors exacerbate the problem, such as a diet high in sodium and carbohydrates, a lack of sleep and a lack of vitamins D, C and K.

Here are the solutions that work best to alleviate the problem:

Introducing the Fab Four Anti-Aging Serums!

18 Aug

I am so thrilled to introduce Vasseur Skincare’s new Fab Four Serums – they are the most potent and highly tailored anti-aging products I have ever created. Serums are distinct because they contain highly concentrated ingredients chemically formulated into molecules much smaller than those in creams, and are absorbed more quickly and deeply into the skin for a highly intensive effect.

I soft launched these products in early 2010 and have been testing and tweaking them for months, so I am excited that they are now complete and ready to be launched. If you have any questions about the serums, please post them in the comments section below.

Now, meet the Fab Four:

Eye Care 101: What’s your Eye-Q?

3 Aug

The eye area is often the first place where signs of aging appear on the face. One of the key ways you can tell the difference between a 30 something and 40 something is the appearance of their eye area. 40-somethings are a lot more likely to have fine lines and bags under the eyes – some will even have the beginnings of crow’s feet. So, if we want to keep your skin looking fresh and ageless, you will need to take special care of your eye area.

First, lets look at how the eye area is different from the rest of your face:

  • It has virtually no sebacious glands, which makes it highly prone to dryness.
  • It is much thinner and more sensitive than other facial skin.
  • It overlies a particularly dense capillary network and has minimal fat padding, which makes the eye area prone to puffiness.
  • It is stressed by frequent eye movements and squinting.

Because the eye area skin is particularly fragile it requires extra efforts for optimal protection and preservation. Here are some key things to remember when caring for the eye area: (more…)

How Do Your Skin Care Needs Change as You Age?

22 Jul new multi gen

Recently, many young starlets have publicly revealed that they use anti-aging products. Three weeks ago, 21 year-old Vanessa Hudgens admitted that she uses anti-aging products as a prevention mechanism, saying, “You might as well start now, put a little lotion on rather than having to get wrinkles. I think it’s smart to start soon. It’s a good beauty tip”. This begs the question – at what age should you start using anti-aging products? What products does your skin really need as you go from 20 to 30 to 40 and beyond?

I personally promote a strategic, science-based approach to selecting skin care as you age. With that in mind, below is a comprehensive (and hopefully fascinating) overview of your key skin changes and primary skin care needs as you age.

In Your Twenties: Prevention

If you are in your 20s, you should approach skin care with prevention in mind. The twenties is not yet time for aggressive wrinkle treatments that modify skin physiology; it is too early to tinker with cell growth rate or aggressively stimulate collagen. Therefore, highly potent anti-aging products with ingredients like retinoids (e.g. Retin A), DMAE or Idebenone are generally inappropriate.

Green Tea and Anti-Aging: All Hype or the Next Big Thing?

17 Jul The Claim: Green Tea is the Next Big Thing in Anti-Aging

Green tea and its skin benefits have been everywhere recently – from Marie Claire to the New York Times to Dr. Oz – and is being touted as the latest and greatest ingredient that can help reduce sun damage and revitalize aging skin. But is this just a passing fad or a serious player in anti-aging skin care?

First, lets look at the claims:

  • The Benefits of Drinking Green Tea: Provides protection from cancer, heart disease and dementia, increases weight loss, improves physical stamina, lowers blood pressure, enhances protection from sun damage and increases survival rates for ovarian cancer.
  • The Benefits of Green Tea in Skin Care: Repairs sun damaged skin, neutralizes UV light, prevents skin cancer, rejuvenates skin cells, reduces inflammation, improves psoriasis, soothes acne and lightens pigmentation.

Are you Practicing Safe Sun? The Seven Sun Sins and How to Avoid Them

14 Jul

If you're going to worship the sun, do it safely

Exposure to ultraviolet light, UVA or UVB, from sunlight accounts for ninety percent of the symptoms of premature skin aging. Ninety percent! Further, exposure to UVAs and UVBs can also lead to melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer – rates of which have dramatically increased over the past 30 years. Given this, it is extremely important to protect yourself from the sun; it is the first and most critical step in taking care of your skin as you age.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the look of that perfect sun-kissed glow – but I always put my skin health first. Below is a list of what I call “the Seven Sun Sins,” the most critical sun mistakes and how to avoid them.

Sin #1: Not applying sunscreen on cloudy or cool days. Don’t be fooled! Clouds may block infrared light (i.e. the feeling of heat), but they only block 20% of UVA and UVB light. This means that sun protection is just as critical on cloudy days as it is on sunny days. Make sun protection a part of your daily routine.

Sin #2: Not reapplying sun protection every two hours. Sunscreen only lasts about two hours after application and needs to be reapplied in sufficient quantities throughout the day (about the size of a quarter onto the hand). We recommend using Day 25 Cream or Day Glow first thing in the morning and taking a face powder with SPF to reapply during the day (we like Bare Essentials SPF 30 powder brush).
