Celebrity Skin Care Secrets

7 Sep

For celebrities, looking flawless is part of the job. With close ups, photo shoots and personal appearances the skin takes center stage, so it’s no surprise that celebrates are religious about taking care of their skin. Here are the top five skin care secrets that celebrities use to keep their skin looking young and gorgeous.

Secret #1: Celebrities pay attention to the ingredients in their skin care products. The trend of going chemical free and using natural ingredients on their skin is in full force. Avoiding skin care products with artificial fragrances, parabens, artificial colorants and sulfates (drying detergents found in most cleansers) is a must for most celebrities.

Secret #2: Celebrities care for their neck, chest and hands in addition to their face. These are the areas on the body that are often neglected and consequently, are dead giveaways of your age. Why? Because these areas don’t have as many reparative oil glands and are less elastic and contain thinner skin tissues than our faces- so damage happens quicker and is more apparent. Celebrities know this and are known to take extra care of their neck, chest and hands. Here are our tips for caring for your décolleté and your hands.

Secret #3: Celebrities stay out of the sun. While we might think of sun bathing as glamorous and sexy, celebrities know better. 70% of premature aging is attributed to sun exposure, and celebrities know it’s not worth it.  The long-term career of female actors can depend on how young and how good they look. So the daily use of sun protection for celebs is an absolute must—365 days a year, rain or shine, inside or out. Also, many celebrities take it a step further and wear sun hats, sunglasses and sun gloves while outside.

Did you know? The UVA rays (the ones that cause skin aging and skin cancer) are approximately the same strength year round –even in winter — and can penetrate through clouds.

Secret #4 Celebrities are facial addicts. Like the French, celebrities know the value of a good facial – and get them often. Celebrities in particular often experiment with different types of facials from chemical peels to microdermabrasion to light treatments. Because they are in the public eye their skin needs to look its best so they receive all the latest technology that skin care treatments offer.

Secret #5: Celebrities prep their skin before applying makeup. Celebrities know that dry skin looks old and emphasizes wrinkles. To minimize the look of wrinkles, celebrities will put on a coat of a gel based moisturizer or a serum before applying foundation in order to fill in any fine lines, smooth the skin and plump up the skin.

French Skin Care Secrets

3 Aug

This month, I am traveling around Europe discovering the skin care trends and secrets that keep European women looking fresh and ageless. After spending some time in Paris speaking with estheticians and friends that live here, here is what i’ve learned:

– French women place a high priority on looking good and tending to their appearance as they age. If a French women let’s herself go physically, it is considered a reflection that she does not have things together mentally.

– French women prefer a naturally sexy look. They place a much higher emphasis on having good skin care then covering up with make up. This is known as the “enhance but don’t camouflage” philosophy.

– For French women, prevention is key. A preventative, proactive skin care approach is typically adopted from a young age. French women generally begin using anti-aging products from a younger age and make sure to wear sunscreen before going outside.

– French women LOVE their facials. We heard from several estheticians here that many French women get weekly facials. This is seen as necessary maintenance rather than a luxury.

– In addition to facials, lymphatic massage treatments are very popular – this is an intensive massage that helps prevent and reduce cellulite.

– French women compliment their skin care regime by eating a light, healthy diet. Many shop for and prepare fresh vegetables several times a week and drink copius amounts of water.

– French women use humidifiers to retain moisture in their skin, some even have humidifiers at their desks at work!

– To kick start circulation in the morning, a common trick that French women use is giving themselves a cold blast in the shower.

– French women love to take luxurious baths – many take baths several times a week and have a variety of enhancements: oils, salts, bubbles and aromatherapy mixes.

– In terms of make up, French women abide by the less is more philosophy. Many just wear lip gloss, mascara and concealer if necessary.

–French women love their perfume and see it as a critical part of their daily beauty routine.

What are your thoughts and reactions? Is there anything that French women do that you’d like to try?

Foods That Boost Your Skin’s Collagen

19 Jul

As we age our skin’s natural store of collagen starts to decline. Why is collagen important? Becuase collagen gives structure to the skin and provides the foundation for elastin and hyaluronic acid. Elastin helps the skin maintain shape and hyaluronic acid cushions and lubricates the skin, keeping it moist and supple.

By replenishing your body’s store of collagen internally with the collagen-boosting foods listed below you can retain and restore your skin’s vibrancy. (more…)

New Celebrity Skin Care Trend – the Liquid Facelift

13 Jul

Have you heard the buzz about the liquid facelift? This is a relatively new skin care treatment quickly growing in popularity among men and women that want a non-surgical way to dramatically enhance the appearance of facial wrinkles and skin sagging. The procedure involves the use of injectables to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and produce more facial contour (read our guide to facial injectables here). In this procedure, BOTOX is typically used to lift the brows and treat crow’s feet and other wrinkles surrounding the eyes and then dermal fillers such as Restylane, Radiesse and Juvéderm are injected around the mouth and nose and along the jaw line and sides of the face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and slackened skin.

Skin Care Ingredient Spotlight: DMAE “Facelift In a Jar”

13 Jun

DMAE – a powerful an antioxidant membrane stabilizer -is the only topical skin care ingredient proven to reduce skin sagging.

Skin Wrinkles Versus Skin Sagging

To appreciate this, it is important to distinguish between topical agents that reduce the appearance of wrinkles and the ones that reduce facial sag. For example, vitamin c derivatives and idebenone have been consistently shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. On the other hand, none of the well known topical agents has been proven to reverse facial sag. A sagging face is arguably a more prominent sign of aging than wrinkles.

Because of it’s skin firming effects, DMAE is commonly referred to “facelift in a jar” or “pantyhose for the face”.

How DMAE Works

DMAE fights against sagging muscles by promoting the production of acetylcholine, the chemical responsible for creating muscle tone. By triggering a response that tones the muscles, the result can be firmer, smoother skin with fewer wrinkles.

What to Look for When Buying DMAE Cream

Correct Concentration: To be effective, the concentration of DMAE has to be at least 5%. Most skin care products on the market, however, contain DMAE in concentrations of 1-3%. But there can also be too much of a good thing – a concentration of 8% or more will be irritating to most people. We have found that the sweet spot is 6-7% DMAE concentration (Vasseur’s DMAE cream is a 6% concentration).

Freshly Made: Chemicals, whether natural or synthetic, decay over time because they react with water, air or each other. When active ingredients decay, a product loses its benefits and may even become harmful. Skin care products that you buy in a store were prepared months if not years in advance and some of their active ingredient may have already partly decayed. (Not all products even state the expiration date). At Vasseur we make all of our products fresh on a bi-weekly basis to ensure you are getting the highest quality product.

When using DMAE for the first time, we recommend doing a patch test before applying it to your entire face and applying the product every other day for the first two weeks to allow your skin to get used to it.

How to Prevent Thinning Hair

18 May

Most people don’t think about their scalp until their hair starts to thin or fall out. Such was the case with my partner of many years, whose hair started to thin a couple of years ago. When I noticed the thinning, I went out to the store and bought him Rogaine and a few other products that promised to help his hair grow back. But, after several months of using the products he had not shown any improvement whatsoever. I decided at this point to do some research on hair loss and apply my knowledge of cosmetic chemistry create a solution myself. This is what I learned, which led to the development of Vasseur Skincare’s Hair Raiser treatment:
