Skin Care Ingredient Spotlight: Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)

12 May

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is an advanced antioxidant that helps fight free radicals- one of the major causes of skin aging. Some research claims it is 400 times more potent than Vitamin C & E! Vasseur Skincare has been using highly concentrated ALA in our skin care for years, and here’s why:

ALA Increases Skin Metabolism

Alpha lipoic acid is found naturally in the mitochondria or energy-producing portion of our cells. It increases cellular metabolism, causing skin cells to take in more nutrients, remove waste and revitalize damaged skin components. This is especially important since skin cell metabolism greatly decreases as we age.

ALA Reduces Inflammation and Redness

Inflammation of the skin is an open invitation for lines and wrinkles. Alpha lipoic acid prevents skin cells from producing pro inflammatory chemicals called cytokines that seriously damage cells and accelerate the aging process. This helps reduce and prevent inflammation and redness in the skin.

ALA Fights Free Radical Damage

A study published in the Global Cosmetic Industry Journal, showed that alpha lipoic acid is both water and fat soluble and therefore can fight free radical damage in all parts of your skin cells. In addition, Alpha lipoic acid can actually enhance the effectiveness of both vitamin C and vitamin E.

ALA Reduces Wrinkles and Scarring

As we age our collagen becomes stiff an inflexible, leading to the wrinkles and stiffness of older skin. The addition of alpha lipoic acid in a skincare product activates a collagen regulating factor called AP-1 that turns on enzymes that actually digest only the damaged collagen, resulting in the elimination and erasing of wrinkles and facial scaring.

Sounds pretty great, right? Well, in my experience using it and giving to my clients over many years – it really is. One thing you should note, however, is that all skin care products containing ALA are not created equal. The quality, concentration and freshness of the Alpha Lipoic Acid make a significant difference. This is why Vasseur Skincare’s ALA Cream is the best on the market and has been a top bestseller of ours for 10 years.
