Skin Care Myth: You Must Avoid All Oil in Skin Care if You Have Oily Skin

18 Sep

Today, I want to address a common skin care myth: If you have oily skin you must avoid oils in skin care. Virtually all creams and lotions use some form of oil or emollient to make the product slip across the skin. But not all oils are comedogenic and pore-clogging. Safe, non-pore clogging oils to look for are: Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Safflower Oil, Jojoba Oil, Soybean Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil and Macadamia Nut Oil, Coconut Oil and Avocado Oil.

In addition, those with all skin types need to be vigilant in looking out for certain ingredients (many of which are common in skin care products) that will likely cause you to break out. here is a list of the top ingredients that you want to avoid:

  • Acetylaled Lanolin
  • Discodium Monoocleanido PEG 2 Sulfosuccinate
  • Ethylheryl Palmitate
  • Polvglyceryt.3-Dilisostearate
  • Bexydecyl Alcohol
  • Ceteareth 20
  • Cetearyl Alcohol+
  • Glyceryl 3 Dilsostearate
  • Isopropyl Palmitate
  • Isostearyl lsostearate
  • SO Alcohol 40
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Steareth 10
  • Stearyl Alcohol
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Lauric Acid
  • Methyl Paraban/Propyl Paraben
  • Myrilstyl Lactate
  • Myrlstyl Myrlstate
  • PEG 200 and Dilaurate Xylene.

Pay particular attention to your shampoo and conditioner – most contain Sodium Laural/Laureth Sulfate, which is likely to blame if you have small pimples around your hairline.

Coconut oil ALWAYS makes me breakout, whether on my body or face, and whether it is virgin, unrefined or refined. It is a huge no no for a lot of acne sufferers. Just google it….

Sorry for the delay Vitamin C is produced ntalrauly by the skin (and is a water soluble nutrient in the body) and is safe. Glycolic acid is derived from sugar, and should not be absorbed into the bloodstream when applied topically. I personally don’t see why either would cause a problem, but generally people tend to be super paranoid and say not to use anything chemical at all while preg/breastfeeding.
